A ruined castle and a sculpture trail

On our last day in Lancashire we stayed close to our base. We had planned to travel to the lake district so we could do a long walk on the fells but when we checked the weather forecast and found it predicted rain and light snow during the day we decided we would change our plans. Neither of us wanted to get caught out on the hills by bad weather.

We were staying just outside Clitheroe and since we hadn't investigated the town we decided to do that instead. We treated ourselves to a fancy coffee and then set off up the hill to visit the museum and castle. Clitheroe is an old town dating back to Saxon times. The castle is Norman and built in the 12th century. The castle is said to be the smallest Norman castle in England and stands in 16 acres of landscaped gardens. Part of the castle is now used as a museum. As we walked up to the museum we could make out the labyrinth below us.

There were good views across the town to the hills.

Looking in the other direction we spotted Waddow Hall.

Waddow Hall is owned by Girlguiding UK. Groups can stay in the buildings or camp on the different camp sites. We rented a cottage that is just out of shot. It was very comfortable.

The keep of the castle is a ruin. You can see it in the photo below with the war memorial on front. The castle itself too very little time to visit.

The museum was very interesting  and one of the items that really interested me was this commemorative banner that belonged to the Benevolent Society of Downham. The banner, which is made from woven silk had been lost for a number of years before being rediscovered in 2011. It had taken careful conservation to restore it.

In the grounds we found a pinnacle from the Houses of Parliament that was given to the town,

and this bird sculpture.

Later in the day we walked the sculpture trail. There were 22 sculptures and I took photos of all of them but my favourite was the deer.

I also liked the owl seat. We rested here for a little while before heading back to our cottage for our evening meal.

Our short break was a great success. We both came home feeling well rested. I shall be planning our next trip away soon.

Today it's November 1st and I still haven't decided on my November goal. I have several projects to choose from. I think I'm going to sleep on it and make my final decision tomorrow or maybe just do a lucky dip.

  1. Beautiful photos. The decoration in the pavement reminded me of the “Imagine” memorial to John Lennon that we saw in Central Park in New York City. I keep hoping I’ll get to visit your country some day, but time marches on, you know.

  2. A lovely break for you both, with lots of interesting sights. Lucky dip sounds like a good way as any to choose your next project to work on.
